Backdrum is a character design & branding business that creates globally recognizable characters that are focused on social media, emerging technologies, and the adaptability to be created for any medium.
Backdrum's focus on social media, and the meaning of the name itself–offbeat in Korean, took us to two main questions. First, how to avoid the cliche of typical social media speech bubbles without loosing the social focus of the company? Second, how to keep a balance between offbeat and the minimal direction that was given to the brand.
For the offbeat part, I wrote the word back backwards to add a bit of playfulness. For the social media challenge the logo's shape forms a geometric angular speech bubble. The rest of the identity plays with minimal characters made based on a set grid that use the logo's shape to say the values of the company and showcase the companies characters.
